Cinque Terre was absolutely breathtaking. This is a National Park with 5 little fishing villages, each located about 2miles apart, set above the Mediteraneo Sea. The views are unreal! The buildings of each town are pale, pastel colors with laundry hanging, which usually would look tacky, but let me tell you, it was gorgeous! And very homey. It was quite nice. The air was fresh and i don't even know what else to say, but it you get to italy, you MUST go to there!! And Vernazza, where we stayed was my favorite of the 5 Towns... The people were pretty cool, although i think they all were tourist :) .. except for the Vernazza soccer players. The food was amazing, with seafood galore!!! The best mussels i've ever had - Monterossa - one of the villages!! WOW!! And my little hiker friends, you would be thrilled to know that Mia (my housemate from LA) and I hiked the the trail!!! Boy oh boy was that a hike!! Luckily, we accidentially went backwards, so to speak, so we did the hardest part first, which entailed extremely steep, rocky steps and loose gravel footing... so one wrong move and you are overboard... (think the cliffs off route 1 heading towards San Fran) ... ending on the Ville dell 'Amore, AKA Lovers Lane... which was very romantic for Mia and I :) Later we met up with Kelly Morris and Kjartan (our Norwegian friend) for dinner and drinks. And to our delight, we were able to get beer out of the vending machine!! Can you believe that!
So... Mia and I head to Florence... and to my surprise, it is not that great... i mean the Duomo is spectacular! Probably the most beautiful structure, church, i have ever seen. The color is hard to see on a picture, but there are these amazing pinks and pale greens throughout the outside of this massive building. And it is crazy how they put it all together.. The Ponte Vecchio is pretty cool with fantastic little shops and markets and the river it overlooks is very calming... That part of FLorence was great... but the rest of the city, i feel is dirty and too "bustling" for me. The Academy - The DAVID is gianormis! I mean seriously, huge. I was so WOWED, i mean even the veins he carved in the marble looked perfect. But the rest of The Academy didn't have much too offer. If you go, i suggest you make a reservation, like we did (thank you chaz) the line is rediculous to wait on.
Anyway... Mia and I have just arrived in Lucca.. and we are staying with a fantastic friend, Stefano... more on that later...
til then....
