Greece... wow is this place friggin amazing... for starters... Ellen and I flew from Rome to Athens to meet up with Mary, my friend from college... We arrive in Athens shortly after 11:00pm... where poor Mary has been there since 2:00pm... and Low and behold, the European Cup (Soccer) is being held in Athen that night... so there are crazy red jerseys everywhere! Anywhoo... Mary saw the sights and then met Ellen and i for a late dinner... which was delicious... with Balsamic paste.. which was no Olive oil and Balsamic Vinegar.. but it helped the fix! :) and then we headed back to the airport for our 6:00m flight to Santorini... And let me tell you... the Athens airport was a sea of red jersey bodies... there was not a spot of white floor available... men, women, children, all the same were sleeping and/or passed out in every inch of the airport. Since we had no hotel because of the short time period, Mary, Ellen and I pulled up some tile of our own and attempt to take a little nap... It was freezing and we barely slept, but it was something!
A quick little flight to Santorini and we arrive... super early. So early (7:00am) that our room is not ready and we have to sleep in the business center til it is. Which wasnt so bad, except it was cold, and people kept waking us up, trying to use the computer. Anywho, in a few short hours, we were in our cave like room with a jaw dropping view of the Sea and the rest of Santorini.
Later that day, the three of us parked ourselves on our chairs on the cliffs overlooking the Sea with a delicious lunch and our books and of course suntan lotion. We occasionally fall asleep, but were awaken by these little tiny mysterious flying bugs... anywho, it was a fantastic afternoon. For dinner that night we headed to Oie (i think i spelled that wrong) but it is at the far end of the island with an amazing panaoramic view of everything. Surprised that there was no seafood on the menu, we order greek salads and their specials... which really wasnt too special, just Chicken, Pork and something else, i forget, but it was good!
Checking out the town, we do a little sight seeing and shopping and head home.
The next day... BOO!! Rained!! How on earth can it rain in the Greek Islands!?!?! So, needless to say, we were very disappointed. But did that deter us? Heck no! we still went to the Black Beach, where the sand is actually black. It is pretty cool.. we hung out there for the day, had a couple of Greek Beers and Chocolate cake, where the waitress, who only had the 3 of us and one other couple to wait on, was probably the MOST ENERGETIC woman/waitress i have every seen. When she brought out the chocolate cake, she put a sparkler in it and then was shouting FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!! crazy... Still slightly bummed about the rain, we head back to our amazing view and order in massages to the room... quite lovely and our massage lady then recommended the most FANTASTIC - OUT OF THIS WORLD seafood restaurant, Dimitri's. The owner, whose name is escaping me right now was from Vancouver and she came there to visit and never left. That was 20 or so years ago. Anyway, it was right in this little fishing cove. Amazing mussels.. although, i do still thing the ones in Cinqu Terre were better, but these were darn close! And a really great seafood pasta. Mary, Ellen and I were stuffed beyond belief!
Now were are off to Mykonos
